A local paramedic was sent to the intensive-care unit following a multiple car crash Sunday afternoon in Lubbock.

The accident happened when Jason Cook, an off-duty UMC paramedic, spotted a two-vehicle collision at about 4 p.m. off Highway 114, east of Lubbock. He stopped to offer assistance. But as he got out of his car, another vehicle hit him.

Cook sustained a head injury, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, and a broken ankle. He underwent surgery at UMC and remains in serious condition as of Sunday night.

Cook was on his way back to Shallowater with his family, authorities said.

Another person involved in the crash was taken to UMC, and two others to Covenant in Levelland for treatment.
