A weekend crash on the East Side claimed the life of a long-time employee at the San Antonio Express-News.

The wreck on Interstate 10 near Martin Luther King Drive occurred when Sylvia Martinez, 60, veered off the highway and into a guard rail at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Martinez was the newspaper’s main phone line operator. She had worked for the company for about 30 years.

Diana Jimenez, a close friend and co-worker said Martinez was reportedly on her way to AT&T Center, where she also worked part-time as a ticket-taker, when the accident happened.

Martinez, a widow, is survived by three children and three grandchildren.

San Antonio police Sgt. Tina Jones said a medical episode may have caused the crash. An autopsy is pending.
