A driver and his passenger died after their car crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler Sunday morning in Leon County.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the car was behind a Mack truck, both heading east on Highway 7 about 16 miles east of Centerville.

The crash occurred at around 5:45 a.m. when the car slammed into the back of the truck as it attempted to turn right on a private road.

The driver of the car, Marcus Nichols, 30, of Lufkin, and his passenger, James Dewayne Johnson, 30, Jasper, were pronounced dead on the scene. They were both wearing seatbelts.

The Palestine driver of the truck was uninjured. The truck was out of Oklahoma.
