One person has died on Thursday in an accident north of Elgin.

The Department of Public Safety said the accident happened at about 7 a.m. on Highway 95 near County Road 87.

Gregory Robinson, 22, was driving a Dodge Stratus when he attempted to drive on the shoulder of the southbound lane to pass an 18-wheeler.

Robinson lost control when he moved back in front of the truck and crossed into the northbound lane as another 18-wheeler was approaching.

Both drivers moved to avoid collision, but the 18-wheeler still struck Robinson. The 18-wheeler rolled onto its side due to the impact.

Robinson’s Dodge burst into flames upon impact with the truck and got pushed back into the southbound lane in front of the other 18-wheeler, DPS said.

Robinson immediately died in the crash.

Both semi truck drivers are said to be shaken but uninjured.

Traffic in both directions on Highway 95 was detoured, shutting down all lanes for a few hours on Thursday.
