A junior student at Brandeis High School was killed in a car wreck less than a mile from school campus on Tuesday.

San Antonio Police Department spokesman Sgt. Javier Salazar said the accident involved a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer carrying four Brandeis students and a 2011 Chevrolet pickup pulling a trailer with two occupants. The pickup was waiting to turn left on Hausman when the collision happened.

The students were possibly involved in a “possible racing event” during their lunch break, Northside Independent School District Spokesman Pascual Gonzales said.

The driver and passenger of the pickup were taken to Methodist Hospital and were listed in serious condition. The Mitsubishi driver and two occupants were rushed to University Hospital listed, all in critical condition.

Gabrielle Lerma, 17, was a passenger in the back seat of the car. She was flown to the hospital by helicopter but was declared dead on arrival.

Lerma’s friends and former teammates gathered around the softball field Tuesday evening wearing orange ribbons bearing the initials “GL” in remembrance of Lerma.
