Early Sunday’s one-vehicle crash in Jones County left two people dead and two others in stable condition at Hendrick Medical Center.

The fatal wreck was reported at about 1:45 a.m. in Jones County on U.S. Highway 180, one mile west of the intersection with Farm Road 600.

A 2013 Infinity LL Suburban carrying four people was traveling eastbound on U.S. 180 in Jones County when its driver, Christopher Ryan Alaniz, 16, of New Home, Texas, fell asleep at the wheel.

The vehicle drifted off of the roadway, hit a guardrail before going airborne at a dry creek bed and coming to rest on the other side of the creek bed onto the cement embankment.

Two backseat passengers, the driver’s brother Eric Keith Alaniz, 23, and cousin Bobby Lynn Beavers, 24, from Denver, Colo., were pronounced dead at the scene at 2:51 a.m. by Judge Crawford. The bodies were taken to Abilene Professional Services in Abilene.

The driver and his father, Pete Alaniz, 47, from Graham, Texas, were transported to Hendrick Medical Center. Both are in fair condition.

Among the four, only Beavers was not wearing a seatbelt.

The family had attended a funeral in Seminole, Texas and was traveling home to Graham, Texas.

The road was dry and the weather clear when the crash happened.

DPS continues investigating the wreck.
