A Monday night accident left a Greenville man and his dog dead when they were hit by a vehicle.

55-year-old Darryl Harris had gone out to get pizza when his 1-year-old black lab, Pepper, ran out of the house at 6012 White Horse Road shortly after he left.

Chief Deputy Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis said Harris went straight for the dog when it was hit by a car. Seconds later, while Harris was still bending to assist the dog, another vehicle hit them, killing them both.

Ellis said Harris was declared dead at the scene at 8:41 p.m. of multiple fatal injuries.  The dog died instantly, too.

Ellis added Harris’ death was ruled accidental and Highway Patrol investigated the case.
