A two-vehicle head-on crash on County Road 1040 near the small Hunt County town of Celeste left three people dead Thursday night.

Brett Wayne Vick, 44, of Greenville, was driving a 2002 Chevy Impala travelling south on Highway 69 from Denison to Greenville when he crossed into the northbound lanes and crashed head-on into an oncoming red Ford Escape, causing a fiery accident at around 8:30 p.m.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, both drivers were killed immediately.

The occupants of the SUV were identified as Ouida Compton Richards, 65, the driver, and her mother Melba Anderson Compton, 84, both from Celeste.

Several people living in the area, including an off-duty paramedic, tried to save Compton, but she later died at a local hospital.

The highway was shut down in both directions for several hours as the accident was investigated.
