Laura Lee Dead in Midland Crash

At about 5 p.m. on Sunday, Laura Lee, 54, of Midland, was driving north on Holiday Hill in a Chevy Tahoe when she may have failed to yield to an eastbound tractor-trailer at the intersection with Craddick Highway.

Midland Fire Department training chief Stephen Forbes said the tractor-trailer split down its middle when it rolled over as a result of the crash.

The collision caused the diesel-carrying 18-wheeler trailer to burst into flames catching both vehicles on fire. DPS said Lee apparently had either come to a complete stop or yielded before pulling out in front of the tractor-trailer.

Lee was killed in the fire and the driver of the tractor-trailer, 44-year-old Angel Horack of Odessa, managed to escape from the trailer. Horack was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital in critical condition and was transferred to and remained at a Lubbock hospital Sunday evening with “extensive burns”.

According to Brian McGary, MFD interim battalion chief, firefighters were not able to locate the SUV in the wreckage until they extinguished the blaze.

Smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from miles away after diesel in the tractor-trailer burst into flames. Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the Craddick Highway located between Big Spring Street and Highway 158 remained closed late into the evening.
