Two women and five children were on board a minivan traveling west on I-10 on July 30, 2012 when one of the vehicle’s tires blew out causing the driver to lose control. The minivan rolled over and landed on the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

Another impact occurred when an eastbound Ford Expedition tried to avoid hitting the minivan, swerved but crashed right into it. Investigators believed this impact killed the 2 women and 3 children inside the minivan.

Brittany Leigh Barnes, 25, Candace Denise Barnes, 48, Aaron Israel Arenas, 5, Caiden Matthew Barnes, 4, and Bethanie Ann Barnes, 1, all died from the fatal crash.

The three other passengers of the minivan who survived the accident, two 12-year-old females and one 1-year-old female were taken to a nearby hospital. Two of them are in critical condition.

The three passengers of the SUV had no serious injuries.
