Three people are dead after an accident involving a vehicle heading the wrong way along I-45 in the Woodlands area.

The man and the woman, both in their twenties, were in the car heading south when a northbound vehicle struck them. Both died as a result of injuries caused by the accident.

The driver of the car, Edward Blackwell, 42, was sent to the Memorial Hermann Hospital and is in critical condition. His sole passenger did not survive.

This is the second accident within three days in the same area, both involving vehicles that were heading north in southbound lanes, both involving alcohol.

The first accident happened Friday morning, when a 23-year-old got onto the I-45 southbound lane heading north.

That wreck left two people dead and a third in critical condition. The driver, Nicole Baukus, now faces two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.

“This is a very sad situation”, said Trooper Erik Burse with the Department of Public Safety. “It’s not a road problem. It doesn’t appear that the signs or any road markings would have anyone turn around and do that.”
